What Hollywood actors were the closest lifelong friends after meeting in movies?

In a place like Hollywood, it’s quite difficult to know which are genuine friendships and those that are merely for publicity purposes. The following actors were true friends.

Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole.

United by a desire to live life to the full, Burton and O’Toole became close pals. They had a disagreement in 1971 during the filming of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood. The reason is unknown to me but they did make amends eventually.

James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Spencer Tracy and Frank McHugh.

These four actors were known as the “Hollywood Mafia” or something to that effect. It was a name that summed up the closeness between them.

Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.

There was a platonic kind of relationship between Taylor and Clift, they were like brother and sister. When Clift was having mental health problems, Taylor was one of the few people in Hollywood who cared and helped.

Marlon Brando and Karl Malden.

Marlon Brando spoke very warmly of Karl Malden in his memoirs, both as a person as well as an actor. The feeling was mutual. The above photo is from On the Waterfront and I believe the camaraderie between the two actors is natural.

John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd.

Two comedians who played a considerable part in reinventing American comedy. Belushi and Aykroyd complimented each other as performers and as people. They collaborated on TV and on film, appearing in 1941, The Blues Brothers (their best) and Neighbours.

After John Belushi suddenly passed away, Dan Aykroyd was devastated and he misses him to this day.
