Did science try to explain the levitating Asian monks somehow, except claiming that they’re a hoax?

Not science, engineering.

From the first time I saw these guys, I was amazed that the explanation wasn’t obvious to literally everyone.

You will always see two interesting features with such levitators. There’s a staff in hand, and a carpet or something below. The intuitively obvious answer is that the carpet/flowers/whatever serve as a base and the staff serves as the structural join between the base and some seating apparatus that runs through the sleeves of the robe.

It’s nifty, but not complicated. The trick is obvious but with a moment’s thought.
