How can I save someone trapped in a car that’s going underwater?

You’re going to have to find some way to break the glass, preferably with a gun, or a rock if the car’s not that far off from the shore.

New Zealand, 2015. A 63-year-old woman accidentally drove her car into a harbor and began sinking very quickly.

Bystanders immediately called the police and they arrived on the scene.

Two officers, joined by two bystanders, made several attempts to break into the woman’s car. They finally succeeded when one of the officers threw a huge rock and broke the woman’s rear window.

The officers then managed to pull the woman from the car to safety, but said they got her out just in time. One of them told NZ Herald:

It was pretty close, probably 30 or 40 seconds after we managed to get the female out of the car, the car was already slipping further into the water. I’d say she’d probably only had maximum probably another minute, minute-and-a-half if she hadn’t got out.

When those two officers were congratulated on saving the 63-year old woman’s life, they said, ‘It’s just another day on the job.”
