How long does a snake’s head stay alive?

If a mammal loses its head, it will die almost immediately. But snakes and other ectotherms, which don’t need as much oxygen to fuel the brain, can probably live on for minutes or even hours. Therefore, severing the head isn’t going to cause immediate death in the animal. Also it could be possible that the snake might not have been self-aware that it no longer had a body. Rather, it likely just felt the pain from the decapitation and then tried to defend itself, stated David Penning a Biology Professor at Missouri.

Keeping in mind of this scientific truth, I feel even the olden days poeple seems to have some knowlege about it. We were advised to not play with the head of a snake even after being killed. And if a snake is killed, it is a must to severe the head or slight mistake of the fangs cutting our flesh could leave its poison into to our body.

Many poeple has a culture of enjoying certain species of snakes as part of food habit including the tribals of India. It has a lot of health benefits, especially helpful for our joints and skin. Their flesh are rich souce of proteins and amino acids that boost human immune system. Even those snakes that are consumed including the venomous ones like cobra, we don’t usually take the head home.

And there was also a story that was common among children of our time saying that if we don’t severe the head, other snakes will come, heal it and come back for revenge. So that way I grew up being very mindful about snakes.
