What is the bite from a pike like?

Happened to my brother when he was young.

We were swimming at a lake on a hot summer day, when I heard my brother yelling like hell from pain, and struggling in water. Our dad swam to rescue him, and we found a one-kilo pike had bit him on his heel – and did not let go. We went quickly to shore, with the pike still attached on his heel.

My dad got a nearby branch of wood and killed the pike. Once the squirming and slithering had ended, he pried the jaws of that pike open. I interpreted from my dad’s damnations it was tight as a vise.

My brother yelled and cried from pain. Dad told mom to get my brother to doctor. Pike bites can be filthy and cause inflammation, and in worst cases, septicemia. The teeth had sunk deep in his flesh.

The wound was like a half moon, full of needle-like stings. My brother described it as “like been hit with a baseball bat and stung with a set of needles”. He said it was incredibly burning pain, and the pike would not release its grip.

My brother got a prescription of antibiotics, and the pike ended as our dinner. The predator became the prey.

It’s a pike-eat-pike world. Finnish waters are cruel hunting grounds.
