If a pilot is flying as a passenger does he usually notify the crew that he is a pilot and can offer assistance?

It was going to be a long flight.

Business Class was fully booked. I was not happy.

My ticket was upgradable. Flying Economy is not a big issue. But this was a 15 hour flight…

I decided to take things easy. The most important thing was to fly back home.

Then, at boarding time, something unexpected happened:

Q-Suite, Baby!

There was a last-minute cancellation and I got the last Business Class seat available.

As you can see from the picture, the first sip I gave to that champagne made me instantly unqualified to offer any help.

No.

I don’t notify the crew that I’m a pilot.

The pilots and cabin crew of that flight are fully trained and capable of coping with any situation or emergency.

Offering my assistance makes me feel like I don’t trust them or their problem-solving skills, like a control freak.

Having said that…

In an extreme situation, such as Helios Airways Flight 522, I would definitely offer my help. Some lives, including mine, may depend on that.
