When I had just married my first wife, I was quite fond of my father-in-law. He was a jolly, happy man. Always in for a good time. Practically married to his little gin glasses. He was an alcoholic. But we didn’t call it that. We called it “being a fun guy”. I joined him, enthusiastically.
One day his whole eye turned red out of nowhere. It was freaky. His entire left side felt numb. His arm, his hand, his foot, the side of his mouth, it all stopped cooperating. He suffered a stroke. Now I married young, as he did before me, and the guy was only in his forties at the time. He was taken to a hospital, where he stayed for about two weeks. Thankfully, he did make a full recovery. Got some medication for high blood pressure and had to lessen drinking…
A lot of people aren’t seen as “alcoholics” even though they are. Not until they get alcohol poisoning, suffer a stroke, get into an accident or lose their jobs. Just because you seem like you can “manage” and function well doesn’t mean you’re not an alcoholic. Everyone can manage… until some day, you don’t.
