Absolutely. I’ve seen it plenty of times. The big GSD below is a bundle of energy from working line dogs. He has great manners, but he’s huge (102 lbs and not an ounce of fat) and he loves to play, sometimes getting overly exuberant. He was not raised around children. One day our friend came over to visit with his 3 year old grandson. I was worried how Loki was going to handle it. He walked up to that kid, licked his hand, wagged his tail and proceeded to stand next to that kid all day. The boy would pick up a ball and Loki would patiently wait until it was sorta-tossed for him, then run get it and bring it back. Loki never brings back balls or sticks except to taunt you with it so you’ll play the “catch me if you can” game. We went outside and Loki walked slowly next to that child, letting him rest his hand on Loki’s back. I had never seen such calm, watchful behavior from Loki.
I see this behavior all the time with my German Shepherds.
Added: thank you to all the people commenting on how handsome Loki is. He has been a joy to work with and I think he’s absolutely stunning-but then, he IS my dog!
Here he is in one of his “finer” moments. He loves that gecko.
And this is him laying next to his favorite horse, Tiffany. Tiffany will be 33 in February. Loki loves this horse. And she trusts him completely. None of the other dogs would even think of laying next to her.
