What explains John Marley’s convincing screams in “The Godfather”?

The actor never knew Coppola would use a real horse’s head.

John Marley assumed the head would just be a plastic prop, but, the director had something else in mind.

Coppola wrote in his diary,

….”If the audience does not jump out of their seats on this one, you have failed”….

An assistant went to a dog food factory to pick up the real deal, newly hewn from the shoulders of a plugged nickel race horse.

The assistant brought the head back to the studio in a freezer box and it was slipped into bed with Marley.

He lost control, his screams of horror real.
