In the past week, six police officers have been in my home because my son’s meltdowns turned into angry outbursts.
With all the negative stories about police lately, I wanted to share something different and show how thankful I am for the kindness these officers showed my son.
They arrived not knowing much about autism, but they listened, asked lots of questions, and tried to understand while keeping everyone safe.
Today’s meltdown happened because John wanted to dress like Joe from Blue’s Clues, but I couldn’t find the same shirt anywhere.
After things calmed down, the officers actually went out and bought a blue shirt. With Jenn’s fabric markers, they even tried to make it look like the one John wanted.
That’s what you see in this photo—three officers going out of their way to help a teenage boy with severe autism.
It didn’t end up working, but the fact that they tried meant everything. To me, they’re heroes.
