On Monday, October 11, 1993, 9-year-old Stephanie “Steph” Crane finished her school day at Challis Elementary School in the small town of Challis, Idaho. Like she did every week, she and a few friends walked together to Challis Lanes, the nearby bowling alley, for their after-school kids’ bowling league.

Last Afternoon Seen

At around 4:00 p.m., Stephanie’s mother, Sandi Crane, stopped by the bowling alley to give Stephanie some money for snacks. Stephanie told her mom she would head straight home after she and her friends finished bowling.

The group spent about an hour bowling, chatting, and buying snacks at the counter. Around 4:45 p.m., the kids wrapped up and began leaving for home.

The Walk Toward Home

One of the other kids’ mothers—who was picking up her own child—saw Stephanie walking through the parking lot. She offered Stephanie a ride, but Stephanie turned it down. She often walked home, and it was a very short distance—about 500 yards from the bowling alley to her house.

To get home, Stephanie needed to follow a path that crossed a small footbridge over Garden Creek. That mom last saw Stephanie heading toward the bridge.

She Never Arrived Home

Sometime after 5:00 p.m., when Stephanie hadn’t shown up, her family became concerned. They checked the bowling alley, searched for her along her usual path, and contacted neighbors. When they couldn’t find her, they notified law enforcement.

The Search Begins

Authorities quickly launched a search operation. Officers, volunteers, tracking dogs, helicopters, and search teams scoured the area around the bowling alley, the creek, the bridge, and the surrounding fields and town streets.

Despite the massive search effort, no trace of Stephanie—no clothing, belongings, or confirmed sightings—was found.

Investigation and Leads

Over the years, investigators interviewed hundreds of people, followed many leads, and looked into several persons of interest. Some tips came from other states. A few suspects were questioned, but none were ever charged. The case has had long periods with no new information.

Stephanie’s family has continued to work with law enforcement in hopes of finding answers. Her disappearance remains one of Idaho’s most well-known unsolved missing-child cases.

Current Status

As of today, Stephanie Crane has never been located, and the circumstances of her disappearance remain unknown. She is still listed as a missing child. Law enforcement considers the case active and unsolved.
