My little friend has finally gone back to school. 🌄
Every morning, he walks into my bakery—Café con Leche—with his backpack and a shy smile, ready to show me the homework he finished the night before. I always tell him, “As long as your meals and school needs are taken care of here, you must come every day and show me your progress.” And he does. He never forgets.
His story is not an easy one. He arrived in our town, Espírito Santo, here in Brazil, completely alone. No family, no home—just a brave little heart trying to survive on the streets. The first time he came into my bakery, he wasn’t looking for anything more than a piece of bread. But in his eyes, I saw something else: a quiet strength… and a deep exhaustion no child should ever carry.
Little by little, he started returning. First for food, then for warmth, then for conversation. Soon he began trusting me enough to share bits of his life—where he had come from, what he had lost, and how much he still dreamed of going to school again.
So I decided to help him.
I spoke with the school on his behalf, explained his situation, and made sure he could enroll again. He had no one to speak for him—so I became that person. And when he finally put on his uniform for the first time, his smile lit up the whole bakery.
Now, every day after school, he comes to Café con Leche to do his homework at one of the small wooden tables. I sit with him, guide him through the lessons, and celebrate every improvement—every correct answer, every new word he learns, every page he completes.
He is no longer the boy who walked in hungry and alone.
He is becoming a student again.
A child again.
And, one day, a young man who will change his own story.
My name is Rosângela Amaral, owner of Café con Leche in Espírito Santo, Brazil. And I believe in him—with all my heart.
Because believing in one child can help build a better world. ❤
