In 2008, nine-year-old Nathan Thomson was at home in Scotland when a man with a knife broke in and started attacking his mother, stabbing her over and over.

Nathan didn’t run away. Even though he was just a little boy, he jumped in to protect his mum and fought the attacker. The man slashed Nathan across the face with the knife, cutting from his nose almost to his eye, breaking his jaw and leaving a scar that will never go away. Nathan needed ten stitches and still managed to get out the back door to get help.

His mum was stabbed twelve times in total, eight of them by the attacker, a 35-year-old man named Clark. Nathan’s twelve-year-old sister Shannon locked herself in her bedroom and then jumped out the window to escape.

Because of what Nathan did, one of Scotland’s top law officers said he deserved a bravery award for saving his mother’s life.

Clark admitted he had tried to murder her and was sent to prison for eight and a half years.
