I don’t know exactly when the abuse started

I don’t know exactly when the abuse started, but it ended when I was 4 and my sister was 6.
Both of our parents worked, so we spent every workday at the babysitter’s house. Most of my earliest memories are from being there. It was a husband and wife who both abused us. Over time, my sister began to have behavior problems. She was diagnosed with hypoglycemia, and we weren’t allowed to have sugar.

On the worst day of my mother’s life, my father was hurt at work. She came to pick us up early from the babysitter. When she walked in, she found us eating popsicles. She knew we weren’t allowed sugar, so she started asking questions. That’s when we told her everything. She went straight to the police. But the police told her they couldn’t act without proof. They even said my sister and I would have to go back to that house so the abuse could be caught and recorded. My mother refused to let that happen.

I thank God for the way my mother protected us. And I’m grateful that the law has since changed, so now police can listen to the testimony of a child without demanding “proof.”
