Tragedy Avoided!
By Katie Jacobson

For dinner, we ordered from Cracker Barrel. We got a family meal that came with biscuits, butter, and little honey packets. After dinner, we were all sitting in the living room when Maggie came over to me. She pointed to her mouth and said, “I just swallowed that.”

“Swallowed what?” I asked.

“That shiny thing,” she said.

I looked around to see what she might mean. Then I saw a Barbie doll on the table. Levi was sitting nearby, and his eyes got big as he said, “I just took one of those out.”

He was talking about a little button battery from the doll’s leg. The cover had come off, and Maggie had swallowed it. I knew right away this was serious.

We quickly started getting ready to go to the hospital. While I was doing that, Eva was looking things up on her phone. She said, “Mom, it says to give her honey.”

Right there on the table were the little honey packets from dinner. How amazing is that? It felt like God was looking out for us. We gave Maggie a couple of honey packets and grabbed the rest for the ride to the hospital. I gave her more honey in the car.

At the hospital, they took an x-ray, and sure enough, the battery was in her stomach. Thankfully, it had moved past the danger zone. They kept her overnight, planning to remove it in the morning if needed.

The next morning, another x-ray showed the battery was moving into her intestines, which meant it was much less risky. Maggie was discharged right after breakfast!

The doctors told us several times how important it was that we gave her honey right away. The honey coated the battery and kept it from getting stuck.
