In Florida, a man named Travis Ray Thompson, age 27, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter, Jacklyn Schwingel.

On May 3, 2022, Thompson was caring for the toddler while her mother was at work. Less than half an hour after the mother left, Thompson called her and said something was wrong with the child. When the mother returned home, she found her daughter in critical condition and immediately sought help. Despite emergency medical efforts, the child died shortly afterward.

Medical experts later testified that the child had suffered severe internal injuries, which they concluded were caused intentionally. Prosecutors said the injuries could not have been the result of an accident.

The case went to trial, and on June 4, 2025, a jury found Thompson guilty of first-degree murder. Because of the severity of the crime and the age of the victim, the judge sentenced him to life imprisonment, meaning he will never be released.

Prosecutors described the killing as an extreme act of violence against a defenseless child and said the life sentence ensures he will never be able to harm anyone again.
