An elderly woman came into my gas station today and handed me $3 in change to put on her gas pump. A police officer was standing behind her and overheard the amount. He also noticed she was using a cane and struggling to walk back to her car.
The officer went outside and kindly told her to sit in the car while he pumped the gas for her. As they talked for a few minutes, he realized she was really struggling. She had no gas left and no extra money. The $3 would only get her a very short distance.
The officer told her to hang tight, then came back inside and quietly added another $20 of his own money to her pump. He went back out and finished pumping the gas.
While they talked, the woman shared that her husband had recently passed away. She was now alone, trying to pay all the bills by herself, and falling behind every month. That extra $20 meant so much to her—it truly helped. Without it, she likely would have run out of gas.
These days, there is so much negativity toward police officers. We hear the complaints and the bad stories far more than the good ones. I’m not saying every officer is perfect—no one is. We all make mistakes. But moments like this remind us that there are many officers who truly care.
They leave their families every day to help protect everyone else’s. Think about it—who do you call when you’re in danger? Who runs toward harm while others are running away?
To all the men and women in blue: thank you for your service.
