Can you name any Hollywood actors or actresses who were rejected by casting directors in their early days?

Tom Selleck appeared on the Hollywood scene in 1965 ready to do whatever it took to succeed as an actor. Unfortunately, casting directors took a look at his handsome face and tall, well-proportioned body… and passed. He was told repeatedly that his voice was too high-pitched and that he’d never “make it” in this industry. His voice just didn’t match his appearance. He landed a few bit parts here and there, including an appearance on The Dating Game, but it was an uphill battle.

Then in 1980, CBS was casting their new series Magnum P.I. They were looking for a strong male lead, but they wanted to keep the show from being too heavy or too solemn. They wanted the lead actor to be taken seriously, but still have a sense of lightheartedness. In walks Tom Selleck. He had it all. He could be menacing when necessary, and he could be a big kid when called for. That “career-killing” voice made him unique. And it made him a star.
