Catherine Dior, the sister of famous fashion designer Christian Dior, was born in 1917 in Granville. In 1941, during World War II, she joined a resistance group to gather information about German soldiers and weapons.

In July 1944, Catherine was arrested by the Gestapo in Paris. Despite being tortured for days, she never gave away any information.

She was sent to Ravensbruck, a concentration camp, with 1,654 men and 543 women. There, she was given the prisoner number 57813.

She was freed in 1945, but when she returned home, her family had trouble recognizing her because she had changed so much from her time in the camp.

In 1947, her brother Christian Dior created a perfume called “Miss Dior” in her honor.

Catherine was awarded several medals for her bravery in the Resistance, including the Croix de Guerre, the King’s Medal for Courage in the Cause of Freedom, and the Legion of Honour
