I believe that he was ready for the family life when he met her. He knew that the bond he and John had shared over half of his life was fractured, he needed someone to be his world. He wanted children badly, he was a born daddy, she came with a ready made one. If he didn’t deeply love her in the beginning I believe that he came to when she literally pulled him back from the void after the Beatles split.
He and she had both been around the block. He the rock star who had sexed up hundreds of groupies and She the groupie who had sexed up more than her fair share of rock stars. Both of them were ready for something deeper. If it wasn’t perfect well that’s not our business. I never have heard even a hint that they weren’t devoted to one another or that either of them ever cheated on the other.
I also however think that he and Jane Asher never quite got over one another. I think if she had been willing to do the whole family thing it would have been her he married. But she and Paul had very different priorities in their lives. She’s remained the class act by never doing a tell all, and it’s easy money she’s got plenty she could tell.
Paul and Linda were a romance story, not Sleeping Beauty or Rapunzel perhaps but a romantic story. They spent thirty years together monogamously and she saved his life and career. She gave him back his confidence. What more can we ask for?
