I missed my first flight to Los Angeles yesterday and had to take a later one. At the time, I was really upset—but now I understand why it happened.
When I finally arrived at LAX and went to baggage claim, I stopped in the bathroom to check my makeup. While I was there, I heard a woman crying very loudly. I wanted to say something like, “It’ll be okay,” but I felt nervous. She was speaking Spanish, and I wasn’t sure she would understand me.
I left the bathroom, but while waiting for my bags (the flight was completely full), I kept going back in. I returned four different times, and each time I could still hear her crying. Then I heard her say, “But the bus doesn’t come until tomorrow.” My heart immediately sank.
I finally asked her if she had Zelle or Cash App so I could send her some money. She said no. Then I asked if I could pay for a hotel room for her until the next day. She stopped crying and opened the stall door—and that’s when I saw her children sleeping with her in the stall.
In that moment, I felt so grateful that I could help, even though I was spending the little money I had. I knew it was going toward something that truly mattered. I drove her to the Marriott and paid for a room for her and her kids.
I wanted to share this experience because I kept thinking: How many people heard her crying for hours, didn’t know she had children with her, and just kept walking by? I’m so glad I chose to say something. She was incredibly sweet and thankful, and she had babies with her.
