In July 2020, Corinna Smith, a 59-year-old woman, attacked her 81-year-old husband, Michael Baines, while he was sleeping in their home in Cheshire, England. She was angry after her daughter accused Michael of abusing her and her brother.
Corinna’s son had died by suicide in 2007 and had mentioned to his mother that he may have been abused when he was younger. Thirteen years later, Corinna found out from her daughter that the abuser her son had hinted at was actually her husband.
On the day of the attack, Corinna filled a bucket with boiling water from her garden and mixed it with 3 kilograms of sugar. Then, while Michael was asleep, she poured this boiling sugar solution over his arms and chest before leaving the house. Michael was seriously injured.
A neighbor quickly called an ambulance, but Michael died after staying in the hospital for several days.
After a trial at Chester Crown Court, Corinna was found guilty of murdering her husband and received a life sentence in prison, with a minimum of 12 years she must serve. Despite this, there is an ongoing online petition where some people are asking for her release.
