Sophia Loren – Full Story in English

Sophia Loren’s remarkable life began even before she was born. Her mother, Romilda Villani, was a strikingly beautiful young woman who resembled the legendary actress Greta Garbo so closely that she actually won a look-alike contest in 1932. The prize included an opportunity to go to Hollywood, but because Romilda was only 17, her mother refused to let her pursue the chance. Not long afterward, Romilda became pregnant, and Sophia was born—changing the course of both of their lives forever.

Growing up in Italy, Sophia did not start out as the glamorous icon the world later knew her to be. As a child, she was extremely thin and considered quite plain. Other children teased her and called her names like “The Stick” and “Toothpick.” It wasn’t until she turned 14 that her looks began to change dramatically, and people started noticing the beauty she would eventually become famous for.

Sophia also grew into a tall woman—almost 5 feet 9 inches. Combined with her preference for high heels and voluminous hairstyles, she could easily appear to be over six feet tall. This sometimes made male actors nervous about working with her, fearing she might tower over them on screen.

Over the years, Sophia Loren became one of cinema’s most enduring icons. Her talent, charisma, and beauty earned her a place on the American Film Institute’s 1999 list of the 100 Greatest Movie Stars. After the death of Sidney Poitier in January 2022, she became the only living actor remaining from that prestigious list—a testament to her long and influential career.

In addition to her accomplishments on screen, Sophia also has meaningful personal ties in Hollywood. She is the godmother of actress Drew Barrymore, connecting two generations of film royalty.
