What can only be experienced in Australia?

I lived in Sydney when I was a child and returned to Australia early last year. It turns out that it looks a lot like California, but there are some things that will make you laugh.

  • It may be a small thing, but one of the big culture shocks is seeing people walking barefoot everywhere, including supermarkets, schools (my teacher always took off his shoes before starting class), and restaurants. That’s it.

When I went to the dentist last month, a man was about to have his wisdom teeth removed. Apparently he came barefoot from home because he wasn’t wearing shoes and didn’t seem to have brought any. I was strangely intrigued and thought he was brave.

  • Another option is to find a palm-sized reed spider in your home. If you’re more lucky, you might find it while driving on the highway. It’s not poisonous, but it looks a little scary.
  • To wake up with the calls of cockatoos, parakeets, and tropical birds, including my archenemy, the rockfowl.( It’s like Jurassic Park. Also, at certain times of the year, koalas sing during the mating season. Try searching. It’s not cute.
