Get ready to cringe! I used to work at weddings every weekend as a cocktail waitress in an Italian restaurant / banquet hall in Northern New Jersey in the early 1990’s. It was an interesting gig as there were many culturally themed weddings because at the time, we had a large community of immigrants from southern Italy and other surrounding Adriatic countries and the food was exceptionally good and plentiful to the point of excess and sadly, a lot of waste.
Anyway, one reception stands out in particular with a party that was from the country formerly known as Yugoslavia. It was a very long, extravagant and expensive production with a lot of pageantry and members of the large wedding party wore voluminous princess gowns and elaborate bouffant hair-dos.
And as with most weddings, there was a formal toast and the groom was supposed to kiss the bride afterward. However, according to the father of the bride who was very inebriated, the groom’s kiss was apparently too lame, so he laughingly chastised his new son-in-law and pushed him out of the way to show him how a proper kiss was done. He then proceeded to grab his own daughter and aggressively tongue kiss her in front of 200+ slack-jawed guests. There were audible gasps and the poor bride was visibly humiliated and I remember feeling so embarrassed for her. Up until then it had otherwise been a perfect reception.
