When I was a kid

2

When I was a kid, I brought home a boy who had nowhere to live. His mother had abandoned him while he was away at school.

When the school year ended and he returned home, he found the house empty. There was no note, no phone number, no relatives to call—nothing. He had no idea where his mother had gone or why she had left.

So he wandered to a nearby park and sat there alone in the rain, not knowing what to do or where to go.

That’s where I saw him. I recognized him from school and could tell something was very wrong. When he told me what had happened, my heart broke for him. I couldn’t leave him there, so I took him home with me.

When I introduced him to my mom, she didn’t hesitate for a single moment. She welcomed him with open arms and treated him like one of her own children. She fed him, made sure he had clothes, gave him a place to sleep, and most importantly—she gave him love and a sense of family again.

Now, 24 years later, he is still a part of our family. My mom has become an incredible grandmother to all her children’s kids—including his.

The photo you see is of him and my mom, taken just last week at her daughter’s graduation. It’s a beautiful reminder of how one act of kindness changed a life forever.
