He just earned so much money in such a relatively short period of time that he decided to take a break. That “break “ lasted nearly a decade and now he’s unlikely to return to the hectic schedule that he was maintaining during the 1980s and 1990s before and following his breakout role in Goodfellas.
Additionally for every financial hit he was in like My Cousin Vinny and Casino, there was a The Super and Gone Fishin’. Pesci’s box office take was too inconsistent and so he moved into the background. He returned in 2006, although even then he took supporting rather than leading roles.
Finally Pesci is 78. While his health is supposed to be good, he probably doesn’t feel like traveling to California from his New Jersey home for much film work. Since he’s wealthy, he doesn’t have to, and so he doesn’t.
